Using materials like hair from the family dog and feathers from backyard chickens, Berkley crafted flies to attract local bluegill and bass. Thus, the Berkley Fly Co. was born. By the time Berk graduated high school in 1939, he had already employed several girls from the area who worked on creating flies and cable wire leaders in their homes.

As the business outgrew Berkley's parents' basement and living room, he expanded to the second floor of a local grocery store, using innovative methods like a tub of ice and a fan for air conditioning. After completing his education at the state university and serving in the Army Air Corps, Berk returned to Spirit Lake in 1945 to establish Berkley and Company, focusing on cable wire leaders.

Driven by a passion for innovation, Berkley delved into producing nylon monofilament fishing line after a serendipitous discovery in Popular Science. This led to the development of Trilene, a breakthrough product that revolutionized the fishing industry. Over the next decades, Berkley continued to grow and diversify its product line, venturing into rods, international markets, and soft plastic baits.
